tasty taste

as the expression goes, 'some people's taste is in their mouth' and although this is meant to be a patronizing slam....having your 'taste' reside in your mouth, can be a great thing if you're Cheryl Porro – software quality engineer by day, erstwhile baker for hire by night. Porro, has the most incredible baking website i've ever seen. cupcakeblog.com my taste is definitely not in my mouth ( i love a good baloney/potato chip sandwich on white) i have no flavors in my memory bank. color, design, scale, not a problem. i can create a visual image in my head, pulling from mental files. but taste? no way. i have the "Levitz" of taste buds. so when something like the cupcakeblog comes into my radar....i'm blown away. her posts begin, with a lovely photo (all of which she art directs and shoots), then a bit of info providing the impetus for her concoctions and then moves the reader through the process with photos and instruction, finishing it all up with the recipe, hints and how-tos, approximate nutritional values, with and without frosting. here are a few of her recent posting titles:

"fresh fig and almond cupcake bombe" (which of course would be.....'da bomb')

"chocolate cupcake stuffed with ginger caramel, frosted with mango ganache, and topped with a mango-Ginger won ton" (off the hook, crazy)

"Blueberry & Raspberry Ricotta Almond Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting" ("hello!", little party on your tastebuds!)

"Jackfruit, Banana, and Peanut Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting" (i don't even know what a jackfruit is let alone the flavor)

"Alfajore Cupcakes or Peruvian Caramel Filled Lemon Cupcakes with Raspberry Buttercream and Coconut" (dude, your insane)

the thing that makes her so different (if it isn't glaringly obvious yet) from the new trend of cupcake makers is that absolutely no angle of the design is overlooked. she pulls together exotic flavors, creates visual beauty, uses the confectioner skills of a cordon blue grad. and if that's not enough.....has a wonderful way of naming these little lovelies AND photographing them. i'm telling you, her talent is insane. IN-SANE.

Cheryl lives in San Francisco with her musician husband (and brand new baby) and sensitive Boston terrier and can be found during her lunch breaks at the Ferry Building Marketplace coveting pricey ingredients.

To date, Cheryl’s recipes have been published in the San Francisco Chronicle food section.
