Cutting and Pasting with John Derian

Way back in the early 90's I can remember seeing designer, John Derian's decoupaged work at Bendel's in NYC. In all of my youthful cockiness, I had one of my, 'I can totally make that' moments. And I tried. I actually, went out, purchased clear glass plates from Pier 1 and attempted to decoupage (modpodge) my own knock-offs. I wasn't very successful. Derian however, has continued to create and hone this craft and I really believe that his work has evolved and become so much more interesting and beautiful (than mine ever was). Derian has long been an avid collector of antique fruit, flower and animal prints. He (or his assistants) then hand-paints borders over centuries-old ledgers and letters. He combines all of these elements into charmingly eccentric collages, which are reprinted and pieced together in layers under glass accessories. His ever- expanding collection includes plates, platters, paperweights, coasters, lamps, bowls, bell jars, urns and vases. (btw, I kind of still think I could do this)

Thanks for sharing this. I remember his work at Bendel's when I worked in Manhattan some years ago. I was also in awe of the Polish hand painted tea cups...
