are you down with down?

Recently there's been a discussion regarding tossing the high profiled, down comforter, dressed bed for the more austere, flat blanket look. { as seen in the WSJ } I suppose as with all fashion trends, after awhile what's new is old is new or old again. something like that. The whole trend of down comforters seems to have made its come back in the 80s when more was more. But now, the trend seems to be returning to the sleek, blanket-coverlet look. Don't mess with my comfort when it comes to sleep, I say.

Dont' get me wrong, I've always loved the look of an antique textile draped over a bed but I could never snuggle down under one of those into sweet slumber.

Personally, I'm a puff girl. I use a coverlet but fold the down comforter at the end of the bed when not in use. I like to sleep under heavy weight, not some thin little piece of fabric that feels like a piece of Nan, no matter who chic it looks. Will you be turning in your fluffy bedding for something streamlined?

yeah, I'm sticking with down for myself...have tried the coverlet thing a few times with clients and we always end up layering a down comforter on later

Living in the midwest, I can't conceive of giving up my feather duvet. It's so incredibly cold in winter that I would never get warm at night without it. I love its warmth without weight! Down forever!

It's funny, I feel the same, I love the weight and fluffy snuggly. A bed is not so inviting "simply" made. I love to read in bed and the comforter is wonderful with out "going" to bed.

I love the snuglly comfort. I don't like a "simple" bed. I love to read in bed and hate to be under the covers, the comforter makes life wonderful.

I already have switched to a black and white Liberty quilt from Targey, as of last summer. It took some getting used to.

I use a down duvet in the winter and a flat blanket in the summer - it's all seasonal in this part of the country! Just when you're bored with one, it's time for the other!
I'm very happy snuggling under my duvet this time of year. Come the warmer nights though I and I do love just crispy white sheets with a cotton blanket for weight. Sleep well.
I've always dug the Euro-style of bedding, and have always thought they got it: high quality down duvet and nothing but a fitted sheet, all in that cottony goodness.

Makes me wanna go to bed just thinking about it.....
I love to snuggle up under a down comforter. I, too have a coverlet and then fold the comforter at the end of the bed. My friend's mother has had her home featured in Southern Accents and has incredible taste. She and her daughter are constantly at odds over the down comforter issue. Her mother finds them tacky, but my friend loves hers and refuses to give it up.

Funny, at the moment I have so many fluffy layers piled high on the bed, that finally, I covered all of them up with a traditionally thin bed spread.

My favorite of them all is our Chinese silk filled comforter, or... maybe the New Zealand wool?

Cheers!

Depends on the season....
I get cold easily, (even in Phoenix!), and so I love my down comforter in the winter to keep things cozy and warm. Come summertime, a thin matelasse coverlet and a cotton or linen sheet (with the fan on to keep things cool) is perfect.
I can't live without my down comforter. Those other beds look hard and uncomfortable.

I need the down. We've tried the coverlet and it's just not right! Down feels so luxurious!

No way--I love the down. I too like heavy, and it's just WARM. I sleep under it in the summer too. Who wants to sleep in a tight little prissy hospital bed?
Even though I live in Australia and it's 40 degrees some nights, I could never sleep in anything other than a down duvet. If I can't sleep under it, I suggle up to it. My bf is jealous, but that's how much I'm down with down!!

Hi Megan,
aesthetics are good to a point...
I turn my heat down to 55 degree's at night so down is the only way to go...even the dog has to sleep under the covers to keep warm....(I live in northern lower Michigan, up north with the polar bears...)
have great evening..

I thought it was an interesting piece, but I am always freezing at night, winter and summer and cannot do without down. I've never once thought it too hot. One wool blanket is my second layer.
Love the down. But I am starting to waiver. I do prefer a sleek look. You have the perfect compromise: coverlet with folded over down comforter. I am currently re-doing my bedroom and still haven't quite sure which way to go on the bedding. Do I ditch the down or not? I quite haven't decided.....

I'm a puff girl all the way - 365 days a year. Love it. I've been to peoples houses where they use the flat look and all night I'm freezing because they didn't offer additional blankets.

I am definitely a down girl - I live in Vermont, after all! We have even been known to go the double-down route: a lighter down blanket under a big, fluffy one for extra weight & toastiness. Reminds me of cloud-like beds I slumbered in so happily while in Europe. We have a nice coverlet underneath, which looks smart when the comforter is folded down. They can look lovely - the blush-colored bedroom is testimonial to that.
