and so it begins--for like ever....

about 3 years ago, on a warm night, a neighbor and i were drinking a glass of wine when she suggested that we walk down to the local, salty dog bar.
not being one to hang out in bars, i hesitated. actually, as memory serves me i delivered some snotty comments on the whole idea. but, whatever, i had no match.com dates that night so i decided to go. i mean look at this hole. can't you just smell that skank of 80 year old sea air and stale cigarette smoke? NICE.
immediately upon arriving i bee lined it for the *ladies* room. when i came out, there sat my friend with two guys hovering. there were beers and shots lined up at the bar. i crossed my arms and explained to the guy standing closest to me that , ' i don't drink beer nor do i do shots' he sort of guffawed and asked what i was doing out with such a big chip on my shoulder. i surveyed him, half lidded eyes, smirk on my face.
he looked to be about late 20s early 30s. cute. really good hair, frat boy thing going on. wearing an evil knievel t-shirt...that was wet. and sand all over his legs. i asked, 'what's going on with you tonight? you look like you literally just rolled off of the beach' he then told me he had just jumped off of the pier. (see first photo)
people die doing this. no, i didn't think, 'wow that's so hot. i want to marry you' i thought, 'what a douche. who would do such a dumb-ass thing?' in fact, i also probably said this.
nutshell: we ended up talking until 2 in the morning. mostly about our dogs. he has a beautiful lab named 'george' i have a stinky mutt named 'milo'. eventually i gave him my phone number . to which he responded, 'why would i call you, you're sort of bitchy'. but you know how guys are. a bitchy woman is intrigue. he called 2 weeks later. we went to dinner and we've never been apart since.
nick arquette (nee 'my S.O.') is the most incredible person i've ever known. i knew after that first dinner, that if anything, i needed to keep this man as a friend. his spirit for life was infectious. his leadership in the community had me wowed. nick who lost his mother to cancer at a very young age has, in turn, started a non-profit mentoring program for families who are going through cancer. (walk-with-sally).
this is nick with his mentee, michael
nick is a giver. he's so patient and kind. he's one of those people others gravitate toward. he's always the life of the party. he's incredibly funny. he's street smart like nobody's business. he believes there are no excuses in life if you want to reach your goals. he's one of those people who is always optimistic. he lives, into his creedo of "always being a man of integrity". he's taught me to take my ego out of situations (god, have you ever tried this when arguing? not easy) so that i can see things for what they are.
he's taught me that life is short. really short. this is it. there is no time to feel sorry for ourselves, to be angry because things don't look the way we thought they should. he's taught me that i am so incredibly blessed and have been given to.....generously. and most of all, he reminds me that this life was meant to be lived having fun. it was given to all of us for this short time....to ENJOY.
last june, in true 'nick form' we drove up the coast to big sur for a quick weekend (a very ambitious trip for such a short amount of time) there, on bended knee, he asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. how could i say no. (oh, and a spider bit me on my eye that night so the next day i awoke cyclops style-thanks nature)
we're leaving on wednesday to go to mexico where nick and i will be married saturday night at the home of a friend, on the beach surrounded by 50 of our closest friends and family.
(i had to use this picture someplace )
initially i wanted to create some kind of wonderful image board but then realized this isn't that kind of a blog (i'll leave that to the incredible talents at snippetandink) but i will be posting photos from the week and of course the wedding.
stay tuned: for the photos of my mexican wedding!

Megan - it's great to hear you tell the story - he must be something else. btw - the bar reminds me of the bull, and, I met Shack at the Hatter - not an auspicious beginning, but look how it turned out. Have a wonderful time. Leave that laptop in the bag and enjoy every minute. We can wait until you get back.

Hey There- I just started reading your blog a couple of weeks ago and love your sense of humor (my sisters and I think the same way you do). I just wanted to say that was such a funny and happy story about the way you two met. Congratulations and best wishes from Hawaii-Tara

Megan -- So nice to read the story of where & how your relationship began (especially as a single woman coming up on 40!), and I wish you a sweet & unforgettable wedding. I'm glad you two found each other . . .

When you are back & settled, I wanted to ask if you might speak with Nick about offering his support to Jen at http://thecomfyplace.blogspot.com/.
While she is fighting the good fight at 39 years old, her cancer is terminal. She's suffering most especially about leaving her son and the pain he will carry because of that. I think if she could talk with Nick, it might make a world of difference to her. Thank you for considering this.

Megan I am so so hapy for you! You seem like someone that deserves the very best, and I am happy you have found your best match!

You might not believe me, BUT my husband proposed to me on bended knee on a bluff above the ocean in Big Sur also. Unforgettable!

Wishing you all good things. Have a blast in Mexico! I will be having a Margarita in your honor!

Megan, It's rare that one finds someone who brings out the absolute best in you. Still, it's even rarer that one recognizes this gift and grows from it. I couldn't be happier for you and your S.O. and how refreshing that you both have wit, warmth, generosity of heart and spirit, and lastly the appreciation and love of one another! Oh, one more thing, miles of style and talent! Cheers to to both of you LIVING the rest of your lives together while keeping your individuality. I am such of fan. All the best, Shelley
