peace out

'Milo' 199?-2008
You were a mercy take in the beginning, the shelter couldn't hang on to you much longer. Not a real "looker". Old, gray muzzle, body covered in every possible lump and bump, walking like your dog suit was too tight, breathe that smelled like a garbage dump. A living 'Eyeore'. You were clutzy, and socially inept at the dog park {nibbling other dogs' ears is no way to make friends} but never asked for much. Just a home. A new home and maybe a little love from a new family.
You got that family. A family that fell in DEEP, l. o. v. e. with your loveable, kind, patient self. A family of crazy girls who applied make-up  as you, calmly, sat in a tutu. Who hugged on you, tugged on you and lavished you with kisses daily, hourly and even up to that final moment.
As dogs go, as friends go, as little spirits go, you are one of the best. Thank you for finding us all those many years ago. You changed our lives forever. And you will always be a part of  the story of this family.
peace out, old man. You are deeply loved and will never be forgotten.

OH MEGAN!!!!! Sweet sweet Milo. I'm so sorry and hope your family is doing OK. What a dog, huh? What a trooper! If I only have that much 'go' at life! Thinking of you all. xx

What a beautiful post. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. Just came over from sfgirl to check your blog, didn't expect to see a sad post, but as a dog lover and mom to two myself, wishing you comfort in your many happy memories. Sounds like he was lucky to have a great family and you were lucky to have a great friend.

That is a wonderful memorial to your best friend. We lost our beloved Pekingese Ivy on September 8th and will forever be thankful for the wonderful years she gave us and the memories that will never leave. Our arms are empty, but our hearts are full.

Peace and comfort as we grieve together for the losses of our truly best friends.

I am so sorry about your loss. My beagle of 14 years left me last year. I do understand. Love to the girls for always making Milo one of the clan. Hope you have a peaceful weekend.

They don't ask for much, do they?

I have a puppy but I was up half the night with my old girl (almost 15 and having a tough go of it lately).

How great of you to have given him a home and love til the end.

Megan,

So sorry to hear about your lost. A couple of months ago I went thru the same thing with my husbands first dog. It is never easy, but your words were so beautiful. I'm sure Milo knows how much love he bought into your family's life. My thoughts are with you.

thank you everyone. I wasn't going to memorialize him on the blog. but the girls and nick urged me to do so.

animals are such living examples of the concept of 'benevolence'.

In the end, milo was blind, deaf and diabetic. but still happy. his old body just gave out on him.

Sounds like he was a very lucky dog -- and you were a very lucky family to have him.

RIP, Milo.

I lost my pup last month, and it is so hard to get used to that emptiness after they leave us.

I'll be thinking of you and your family, and hopefully Milo is playing with my little Remy in a dog park in heaven somewhere. (Probably nibbling ears.)

ohhhh, I'm so sad. I'm crying for you. Just consider yourselves blessed to have had him in your lives! I'm sure there are many lessons he taught that will stay with your family forever. I'm so sorry!!

Tears are falling as I read your post. It just makes me remember how much I loved my dog and how hard it was when I lost him. They give so much and ask so little in return. If people could only be a little bit more like dogs, the world would be a much better place. I am trying to get a new dog now, 7 years after losing "Woobie".
So sorry, I really feel your pain.

Oh my dear, I am so sorry for all of you. He was obviously a blessing on 4 legs! Thank you for adopting a black, far from perfect looking dog! My rescue group, Animal Guardians, is holding a "Black Dog Barkapalooza" adoption event on Oct. 4 to try to place those oh, so difficult to re-home rescued BLACK stray dogs that are living with members of our group. They are beautiful! Your family is beautiful! Sweet, lucky Milo! You are all in my thoughts!

my god, i stopped over to link to your post on walnut wallpaper, and now you've got me crying like a baby. moving and beautifully written.

you, milo and your family are so lucky (and fated) to have found each other. i think people that can open their hearts to rescues are amongst the best on earth- it's so easy to bond with a happy puppy, but dogs that are older, with an issue or two, are a tougher sell, so bless you for giving this sweet little guy a beautiful life. i know he bought much to your lives as well.

my sincere condolences on your loss.

ps- now i have to go give my lil mona a hug and a belly rub, and ask her to please live forever...

Sounds like you gave Milo a full life, one he never imagined - even in his craziest dog dreams - and he repaid the favor a million times, and then some.
That old tail probably thumped right to the end.
What a good friend.
All good things to you......Alison

Peace to Milo...from Miss Maggie the mutt and I at the shore house.

Sorry to hear about sweet Milo. He looks like a love bug. I lost my dear Kitty earlier this year. The pain is unbearable, I know. Thoughts are with you. :)

Beautiful way to say goodbye! I am in tears! I lost my precious old fellas Forrest and Asher within a few months of each other -- they were littermates so from the beginning to the end the three of us were a team! I just picked up two rescue dogs who very much needed a good home with love and stability! I'm already in love with both of them.

Ohhhh... Megan, I am so sorry to read about Milo. Being the mum to a rescued dog of indeterminate age, I feel your pain. When I put my last guy to sleep at age 12, it was the hardest thing I've ever done, but I knew it was the right thing.

Hugs to you all.

As a rescue dog owner, isn't it funny, you go to the shelter and think "ok, I'll give you a home and take care of you." Then you fall in love with them and end up getting so much more in return.

david, You're so right. I really didn't have it left in my heart to love Milo at the level that I had with my other dogs (too much hurt when they're gone) and lo and behold....He crept his way in.

thank you, again for all of your condolences .

My lovely Holly dog died age 13 (unlucky for some) a few weeks ago . She was my lil shadow and I miss her so much. A mungrowl(pun intended) rescued from a shelter and with so much bounce and joi de vivre right up till the end. She waited till I'd gone away to my sisters wedding before dying maybe she knew how much I would have hated to see it happen. She was such a sweet friend.

What a great tribute to your friend. They truly are apart of our families, aren't they?

I feel your pain... sometimes everything we see reminds us of them. I had to put down my cat of 16 years back in November on my birthday. It crushed me, but at the same time she gave me 16 wonderful wonderful years. They love us as much as they can and we love them as much as we can! And wouldn't we rather have experienced the love and lost instead of never experiencing it at all?

They are unconditional love. <3
