still....

...and the sofa arrived at the swank little cocktail party wearing what he considered to be 'holiday attire'. the rest of the guests, politely cleared their throats and just pretended not to notice.
he spent the rest of the evening against the wall, flanked by the macgregor sisters.

I have such a visceral reaction to any plaid interior/clothing/upholstery, most of all black watch or stewart...it's all just so New Canaan CT or Fairfield County and staid. Just.not.my.taste.

(mostly due to all those late night flannel Lanz nightgowns that I had in college....blech!)
I so thought of you when I saw this in the magazine.

I also thought of you when I purchased 3 plaid type shirts the other day.

It's coming to get ya!

I should explain,

I'm not against 'plaid' in general. I, myself, recently bought a great plaid shirt at anthro.

My issue is with this tartan, wool in your home attempt. And I know it's a classic, it has its place. But these art directors need to pull back. because this is NOT working.

And sadly, when a lot of readers see this, they think, 'well, if it's in a valued magazine, then it must be right'

bottom line,

Always Question Design Authority

I used to salivate over Domino and have every single issue. But I have let the last 3 or 4 stack up. I just can't take it!

you win. this is really bad. i agree.

ok - I think this is cute, so kill me! it's just a tartan thrown over a sofa. But for the winter, it's cozy. so, take away my ASID status.

I was completely confused when I saw this in Domino..just yesterday...I would have just left well enough alone! This is just wrong! :)

OMG! I'm so glad someone else said it! Where has this magazine been going lately? The rooms don't work and they look overfilled. I had the same reaction to that plaid sofa. I laughed out loud at your commentary! Brilliant!

Oh Joni, didn't you notice the lampshades? Yuk!!!!!!

So, I actually like it - and I went to Catholic school for 8 years during which I wore that tartan every single day, so if anyone should hate it, it's me! I'd like it even more if it had some punk thrown in like the Vivienne Westwood Union Jack pillow. Then it would be super cool like the girl who was literally kicked in the a** by a nun for wearing Vans tennies defaced with TSOL with her tartan jumper. Or, maybe the all those years of inhaling incence are catching up with me.

Megan, you just crack me up!Whatever floats everyone's boat though. It is too masculine a look for me.Oh and yes, my Catholic school unifoms had plenty of plaids over the years.

that's too funny...i've never gotten a good laugh out of a plaid couch before. thanks!

I am in full agreement with you on this. That plaid blanket covered couch does not belong in that modern room. Really what were they thinking???
Sarah's Fab Day said…
Umm yeah, not a good look. The poor sofa is probably crying itself to sleep at night in that getup.

There are rooms where a plaid throw would totally work. This is not one of them.

The lamps are inexcusable.

Very weak Domino issue overall, with a terrible cover.

To me the abomination is keeping the zebra rug in this scenario. My eyeballs have vertigo!

And BJBrux: No love for the Lanz? Time to turn in your Brookline card... Maybe I'm just reliving my college years - midnight runs to the Dunkin Donuts, tastefully attired in our Lanz nightgowns. Good times. In fact, it's going to be a little nippy tonight in SF. I think I'll go into the back 40 of my closet and whip out my red plaid Lanz!
My only criticism is about the lampshades. They are what takes the whole idea way over the top. I think the sofa looks fine and dandy. It's like a sort of mad Scottish lodge, of which I know a few. It's not a room that all in "good taste", which is what makes it memorable and fun. And the room isn't that modern. Everything in it is pretty traditional.

Joni: I love that you liked this. You're such a goy-ophile.

agreed. trying too hard....domino, what's happening?!

I know, I have to say, I loved reading that Joni loved this. Joni has such beautiful taste...Joni! what the hell? you would NOT do this. come on.

hey wait = A. Lament liked it too - and that's pretty fine with me - if he gives it his blessings, that's good enough. I don't care for the lamp shades either. All I was saying is I like the room - for the summer. In the winter - to warm it up - what's wrong with putting a plaid coverlet over the white sofa? I don't get what all the fuss is about. The lampshades are little too much - but whatever - the rooms both look cute to me and what is goy-ophile? hahah!! Megan - I WOULD so do the summer room - but adding the blanket would be up to the clients when it gets cold outside. Chill everyone!

you know I adore you J.

oh, but since nobody asked, I'm very bothered by the 'dusty rose' color in that corner shelf.
The dusty rose is charming, and highly likely to be a bit more strongly pink in person than in print ... colours never reproduce properly in print ... I would gladly do a room like this and snub my nose at anyone who doesn't like it ... after all, it's not their room!
Also note how cheap it was to give the room a season look ... a plaid throw (check), lampshades (okay, maybe not those), plaid cushions (check) ... bingo, done ...

I've never been a huge fan of Domino but I never thought they would sink to this low. No wonder they are teetering on extinction.

i can't handle the 3 different plaids... paired with zebra? who did this?! ridiculous.

aesthete~ it's all in good fun. it's interior design. and thankfully, we all see it differently. One size doesn't fit all.

One of the best discussions I've read in a long tome. It is all in good fun! Wouldn't one add something more wintry in accessories to those rose backed shelves instead of all of the coral? Pewter, beer steins....something, hopefully not something plaid.

I'm not crazy about plaid, but I will say I love the chair! :)

Aesthete: Between this blog and Decorno, you've commented six times on this room. That doesn't sound like someone confident in his convictions.

I have to agree with AL again - the pink is great with the summer room. this really does show how cheaply you can totally redo a room for a winter look. it's amazing really. but the shells need to go away for the winter. and it looks like decorno's famous anon is visiting here. you know for the winter - i would probably use dark suzanis instead of the tartans. I think it would look better. OH OH OH - and AL just did a blog on tartan - so he really likes tartan I guess!!! I"m just glad I agree with him/her! Come on Megan - it doesn't look all that bad!

I like the side chairs in this room...largely because I got one just like these off Craigs list for 75 bucks. My husband , however, wasn't crazy about the chair, but when I showed him Domino mag featuring the same chairs, he began to think they were ok...luckily he didn't look at the the rest of the bagpipes meets safari at the beach aesthetic.

I would like it if they had left off the plaid lampshades and just had the red plaid on the top of the couch and not covering the whole thing.
